Woodland illustrations are by far some of my most loved and popular creations. Foxes, badgers, owls, hedgehogs, squirrels and rabbits are very on trend in the illustration world right now, and with good reason I think! Here are a few of my favourite children’s book woodland creature illustrations and paintings. I like to focus on beautiful colours found in nature, magical atmospheres and cute animal characters. These forest drawings have been created with particular themes in mind – a group of forest friends decorating their Christmas tree in the snowy depths of winter, an owl’s birthday party in the autumn trees and a beautiful red fox darting across frozen lands as the aurora borealis illuminates the magical night skies overhead.
I have so far received some lovely commissions from these pieces of work being in my portfolio. I am working on writing my own stories inspired by these cheeky and cute woodland characters and the lives that I imagine they might live in and around the forest. I love walking in nature, and this is one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to creating these illustrations, looking at the trees and plants around me. The colours, the shapes of leaves and branches and the contrast between the huge structures of trees right down to the beautiful patterns of leaf veins or the shape of delicate petals are stunning. There are so many wonderful woodland textures and colour palettes out there that I like to bring into my digital paintings, using lots of different brushes and overlaying found papers and other patina for a rich and vibrant finish.
